With the future of Allders' store in Oxford still uncertain, the city council should abandon its plans for a massive and intrusive expansion of the Westgate.
Instead, it should encourage John Lewis to develop the Allders' site, plus that formerly occupied by C&A, to create a high quality and imaginative department store near the centre of the city.
It should then return Cornmarket Street and George Street to their original role of city centre shopping streets rather than the present series of pubs, bars and fast-food outlets.
This would be real regeneration. Barbara Raw, Thames Street, Oxford
