A mother has denounced vandals who broke into her car, condemning her severely disabled son to the house for more than a week.

Linda Tidbury, a single mother from Radley, near Abingdon, parks the car, which has been adapted to take a portable hoist, in her driveway.

One morning she found the front passenger door frame had been bent over.

Mrs Tidbury, from St James Road, said: "I cried when I saw the damage.

"They don't know the trouble and heartache they cause by carrying out such senseless vandalism." Vandals had used a crowbar to lever open the door at the top of the window.

Mrs Tidbury said: "They got into the car and tried to take out the spare wheel from under the boot but couldn't manage to get it out.

"There was nothing on view to steal so the whole business was a waste of time.

"It left me with an expensive repair bill for a new door and the car was off the road for over a week."

Mrs Tidbury's 22-year-old son Lee contracted meningitis when he was 11 months old. He is unable to walk or talk.

He is entirely dependent on his mother and twin brother Wayne.

Mrs Tidbury said: "The car has a disabled sticker in the front window but that doesn't seem to bother these sort of mindless vandals." She said she could not afford to claim on her insurance because there was a £300 excess and she would lose her no-claims bonus.

Friends have found a replacement door for the car and will repair the damage as a favour.

She added: "I hope whoever caused this damage will be sick to the bottom of their stomachs when they realise the distress their actions have caused to a disabled young man who gets so much pleasure from being taken out in our car."
