A cancer survivor is preparing to drop 100ft down the side of an Oxford hospital to raise money for research.
Next month, John Mulcahy, 34, of Sixpenny Lane, Chalgrove, will be abseiling from the roof of the John Radcliffe Hospital, Headington - just a month after completing his treatment for Hodgkin's Lymphoma, which affects the lymphatic system.
He is joining 150 other people taking part in the event on Sunday, April 17 to raise £15,000 for Cancer Research UK.
Xerox account manager Mr Mulcahy was diagnosed with cancer in October last year after discovering a lump in his glands while recovering from a sore throat.
His GP referred him to hospital and the prompt action helped catch the cancer early.
He started intense chemotherapy in November, followed by a course of radiotherapy which finished last week.
Mr Mulcahy, who lives with his wife Karen and 11-month-old son Matthew, will now have check-ups every three months.
He said: "During my life, I've seen other people affected by cancer, but I never anticipated that it could happen to me.
"I feel I've just had a near miss because it was caught in the early stages.
"The abseil will be an opportunity for me to do something to help repay the millions of others who have already contributed towards researching a cure for cancer.
"The last six months of anguish haven't been easy, but I know that I have benefited from others who have gone before me, and now it's my turn to help."
About 2,700 people in Oxfordshire are diagnosed with cancer every year, and Cancer Research UK is one of the few charities in the world which turns basic research into treatments.
The charity has a major workforce of doctors and scientists at Oxford University and the city's major hospitals.
Cancer Research UK events organiser Paul Montgomery said: "We wish John the very best of luck in his first ever abseil as he dares to dangle over the Oxford skyline.
"It is a fantastic way to have fun by taking part in a new challenge while raising funds for a seriously worthwhile cause."
Anyone aged 14 or over is invited to take part in the JR abseil, which will include training from experts on the day.
Participants must pay a £15 registration fee and pledge to raise at least £50 in sponsorship.
