Evan Harris is on his way back to the House of Commons for the Liberal Democrats in Oxford West and Abingdon -- but with a reduced majority.
Dr Harris's majority from the previous election of 9,185, was trimmed by Conservative Amanda McLean to 7,683, showing a slight swing to the Tories. But it was not enough to dislodge Dr Harris, who made it a hat trick of wins.
He polled 24,336 votes. Mrs McLean was second with 16,653. Labour's Antonia Bance took third spot with 8,725 votes. Green candidate, Tom Lines, secured 2,091 and bottom of the poll was UKIP candidate, Marcus Watney, with 795.
After the count that was declared at 5.50am, at the White Horse Leisure and Tennis Centre in Abingdon, Dr Harris said he had always considered the seat a marginal one and he was delighted to have been returned with another big majority.
He said: "The turn-out was up and our progress has been reflected nationally with an increased share of the vote and an increase in the number of seats.
"There was a small swing to Mrs McLean but at that rate it will need another 12 elections for the Tories to win this seat."
Dr Harris said the Conservatives had put a lot of money in to winning the seat but still failed to break through. He added: "It has been a good result for us and that, added to the amazing progress at Oxford East, shows that the Liberal Democrats' popularity is growing. People like what we are saying."
Mrs McLean said later: "The swing was towards us, and showed what we can do. We have been talking about the issues that matter to people and that is clear from the national trend.
"I am so pleased that we have made progress in Oxford West and Abingdon. I have enjoyed the campaign and look forward to carrying on the good work. The Tories are fighting back."
