DIDCOT Town face an anxious wait to learn if they will get the opportunity to play-off for a place in the Southern League next season.

Following final ground inspections at the weekend, it was announced in an FA press release that Didcot, who finished second in the Hellenic League Premier Division, would face a play-off with either Enfield or Winchester City at the Loop Meadow Stadium on May 16, with the winners guaranteed a place in the Southern League.

That was because in the 13 feeder leagues, only seven championship-winning clubs had brought their grounds up to scratch by the deadline of April 30.

The league structure required eight clubs to be promoted, which meant Didcot were eligible for the final spot.

But now, following appeals lodged by Wessex League champions Lymington & New Milton and Combined Counties League winners Walton Casuals, the play-off process for the final promotion place has been put on hold.

The appeals of the two clubs are to be heard on Tuesday, and if they are upheld, it would mean no play-off for Didcot, and another season in the Hellenic League.

Lymington and Walton Casuals missed the deadline to bring their grounds up to standard, and Didcot chairman John Bailey believes they don't deserve a second chance.

He said: "We were told that our ground had to be ready by the end of April, and at great expense, we worked hard to do that and passed the grading test."
