An Oxford 'Make Trade Fair' campaigner has seen his efforts rewarded by the World Trade Organisation.

Benny Littlejohn, who lives and works in Oxford, has been campaigning with Oxfam for two years against the level of subsidised sugar exported by the EU.

The WTO has now ruled the EU has been illegally exporting too much subsidised sugar.

Mr Littlejohn welcomed the announcement, but said more needed to be done.

"The writing has been on the wall for ages, but the EU has been refusing to read it," he said.

"This ruling confirms they have been breaking the WTO law and seriously harming developing countries."

Mr Littlejohn has helped organise a number of Oxfam protests outside large UK-based sugar companies, such as Tate & Lyle and British Sugar.

He said the EU subsidy system, funded by EU consumers and UK taxpayers, had benefited such companies at the expense of developing countries.

"Now that this decision has been made, we need to continue to put pressure on our Government and the EU to make trade fair," he said.
