City councillors have thrown out plans for a nightclub in St Aldate's, amid concerns about late-night noise.
A bar, club and artists' studio were planned for an unused former sorting office near the post office, but councillors unanimously agreed it would not be "neighbourly" for nearby residents.
The application was made by MMT Oxford Ltd and Ruskin School of Fine Art.
Murray Hancock, of the city council's planning department, told the meeting: "We can't support the application as it stands. It would be unneighbourly in this location."
The meeting heard that people living in the area, and nearby Pembroke College, had voiced concerns about the plans.
