Following your article (Oxford Mail, May 9), I would like to give more information about the concerns of residents of North Abingdon about the planned mobile phone mast at Lodge Hill roundabout.

The Vale of White Horse District Council received 32 letters of objection on grounds of potential health risks, environmental impact and effect on property prices. Despite this, it not only approved the application without a full committee hearing, but also failed to tell us the outcome.

Vodafone claims on its website that it is committed to "community engagement". However, all it has done is to pin a notice to a tree near the proposed site which I managed to read only after wading through stinging nettles. We have had no other contact with the company.

As residents, we are very concerned about both the health risks and the environmental impact.

This is a nice area of Green Belt countryside and the presence of a mast and its base station will spoil it.

Furthermore, there is serious debate over the safety of these masts. Years ago, tobacco companies were adamant that tobacco was perfectly safe.

Similar discussions have been had about a wide range of products, with manufacturers claiming safety and dangers being proved years later.

I am worried about the potential long-term effects on my 15-month-old son. Many other residents also have young children. What price progress? Susan Harbour, Mattock Way, Abingdon
