What a disaster for Oxford that County Hall is back in the hands of the Conservatives after 20 years (Oxford Mail, May 9).
Tory Oxfordshire will mean more traffic congestion and less backing for public transport.
It will mean even more spending on the wealthy countryside and even less for urban Oxford.
It will mean continuing financial incompetence and much higher council taxes.
The Tories will take the credit for the Labour Government's extra spending on childcare, schools, road repairs, recycling and support for the elderly in their own homes.
At the same time, they will use the county council as a platform to attack progressive ideas.
But not a single division in Oxford has returned a Conservative councillor.
It is high time Oxford, like Reading and Milton Keynes, became a unitary authority.
Let Oxford people decide. Oxford matters.
John Tanner (Councillor)
Littlemore ward
