Inspector Morse may no longer be with us, but his trusted sidekick Lewis is set to return to the streets of Oxford in a special spin-off programme.
Sheila Hancock, the widow of the late actor John Thaw, whose performances made Morse one of the most popular detectives in television history, has given her permission for the programme to go ahead.
Inspector Lewis will be filmed this summer in Oxford and shown in the autumn, with Kevin Whately returning to the role of Lewis, now promoted to Inspector. He will have a new partner, a 30-year-old university graduate called Hathaway.
The success of Inspector Morse, which ran for 13 years on ITV until the final episode, The Remorseful Day, in 2002, boosted the profile of Oxford and drew countless tourists to the city.
Oxford author Colin Dexter, who wrote the Morse novels, is reportedly supporting the project, which could become a series if it proves a hit.
