RESIDENTS in Bicester are fuming after being told they may have to pay up to £200 a year to park in their own street.

People living in Woodfield Road want to stop rail commuters blocking driveways and parking in their spaces.

But they are unhappy with Cherwell District Council's plans to introduce a residents' parking scheme that householders would have to pay for.

David Austin, who lives in the road, said residents should not be penalised because commuters refused to pay to park at Bicester North railway station.

He said: "Why should we have to pay? We pay enough tax and council tax.

"We want a no parking rule for one or two hours a day -- that would stop it."

"I had a lady park across my driveway in her sports car. She got out and off she walked. It was lucky I was in -- I shouted after her and got her to move it. It happens to everyone.

"These are expensive cars parking around here -- if they can afford £30,000 for a car why can't they pay £4 to park at the station?"

Daphne Austin, 73, also of Woodfield Road, said although she had a driveway for her own car, she would have to buy a permit for family and friends.

She said: "It is a lot of money for a permit just because of train passengers."

The district council's chief engineer, Tony Brummell, said the scheme had not been finalised.

He said: "It could be that sort of cost or it could be more or less -- it depends on the take-up but the council would expect to recover its costs."
