Steve Basham has signed a new deal that keeps him at Oxford United for the next two years.

The former Preston and Southampton striker was top scorer for the U's in his first two seasons at the club and hit nine goals last season, despite playing much of the campaign out of position on the wing.

Boss Brian Talbot was delighted that Basham has signed a two-year deal.

"It's signed, sealed and delivered," he said. "I'm very pleased to get one of our top strikers signed up.

"It's a case of him now breaking up, going away on holiday and hopefully coming back refreshed.

"He wants to play up front. I know he's had one or two games in other positions, but it's up front where he wants to play.

"We've got a situation where we have got three main strikers, Tommy Mooney, Basham and Jamie Brooks, all out of contract.

"That was something I inherited and could do nothing about. But we've got one sorted out, and the chairman is in negotiations with the other two."

Basham told the club's website: "It's a two-year contract and a big part of it is the new manager.

"His organisation is second to none, and having done it with Rushden, hopefully he can do it again here.

"The Gaffer is talking about bringing new signings in to strengthen the squad, he has brought a new approach, and I'm looking forward to the new season."

Chairman Firoz Kassam said: "I'm delighted that Steve has signed. He is a very good player and hopefully just the first of many who will be part of an exciting squad for next season.

"We are continuing to talk to Tommy Mooney and his agent and I am optimistic about those negotiations."
