As a Conservative supporter, I share Labour leader Liz Brighouse's upset that Oxfordshire County Council, through democratic vote, has been elected hugely in favour of Conservative members (Oxford Mail, May 11). As a 'general body', a Conservative authority will not see eye-to-eye with Oxford City Council.
Of course, Oxford is only a small area of the county and it is the county that has voted.
It goes without saying that any political party holding a massive majority of seats on a council cannot be considered democratic. I wonder, therefore, if Mrs Brighouse, as Labour group leader, has been concerned that since 1997, this country has been held in the grip of a one-party state from central Government.
Obviously it suits some, but to realists and those who want a democratic society, a total control of power is manifestly wrong.
I don't suppose that Mrs Brighouse voted other than Labour in the General Election. Bruce Skelton, Meteor Close, Bicester
