The victim of what an eyewitness described as a "vicious assault" in Abingdon has not come forward to report the incident to the police.
A woman was driving along Oxford Road near Norman Avenue at about 7pm on Monday when she saw a man get out of a car and grapple with another man on the grass verge.
The woman, who did not want to give her name, said: "It was a vicious assault. The victim was kicked and punched and had his head banged up and down.
"Fortunately for him he was on the grass and not the pavement.
"A man on a bike stood in front of the assailant's car to cover the registration plate when he saw me using my mobile."
She added: "It was clear the two men knew each other. It was an un-nerving experience in daylight."
The victim of the attack left the scene but did not report the incident.
Abingdon police said they were investigating but no-one had come forward to lodge a complaint.
