Erecting railings at Magdalen Bridge, Oxford, on May Morning will merely exacerbate the problem of people jumping into the river.
There is no need to close the bridge. What is needed is a bylaw forbidding jumping and an insistence that the forces of law and order implement it, instead of standing around.
The 'crme de la crme' of our nation's youth is hardly going to be daft enough to incur the ultimate stigma of a criminal record.
