A scheme to redevelop sheltered accommodation in Oxford has been revised to include more one-bedroom flats following requests from residents.

Oxford Citizens Housing Association (OCHA) plans to bulldoze 36 flats in Lucas and Remy Place, Meadow Lane, Iffley, right, and replace them with 28 larger properties.

Tenants have been offered the option of being rehoused or moving back to the Iffley development, but there will not be space for everyone and the rent will go up.

Last month, residents voiced their concerns about the plans at a meeting organised by OCHA.

Andrew Smith, OCHA operations director, said: "What we heard strongly from residents was that they want more one-bed flats. We have changed the scheme and will now have more than originally planned.

"We have listened to what people have had to say and will carry on talking."

Mr Smith said OCHA had also set up a meeting with charity Age Concern to discuss how they can work together to provide support for people feeling anxious about moving.

He said: "We are taking steps and making some very expensive decisions. We're saying to people they can stay, but unfortunately there is no getting away from the fact that it's very disruptive to have people move or think about moving at that age. It's difficult to find a solution to make 100 per cent of people happy."

A 68-year-old resident, who did not want to be named, said: "It's so up in the air -- we don't know when it's happening. I've only been here since Christmas but some people have been here for donkey's years.

"People don't realise how hard it is when you get old."

Last week, it emerged that people living in sheltered housing in Scrutton Close, Headington, fear for the future after OCHA told them their homes could be closed.

Pensioners living at South Oxfordshire Housing Assoc- iation-owned Badgers Close, Forest Hill, and Windows Court, Wheatley, are also fighting similar eviction plans.
