Oxford City won their Southern Men's League Division 3 West meeting by the slender margin of three-and-a-half points in a thrilling finish at Salisbury.

Going into the final event - the 4x400m relay, City knew they had to win the race to secure a narrow victory ahead of Team Kennet - and they duly obliged to take the honours.

City got off to a flying start when Mark Rumble threw 27.62m to win the hammer.

Then an impressive leap of 5.21m in the long jump secured Brendan Davis his first victory of the day.

Despite a badly mistimed hurdle, Davis then held off the challenge of Team Kennet's athlete in the 400m hurdles.

In the 100m, youngster Sam Moss left the field trailing as he won in 11.2 secs, while Antony Palman-Brown backed that up with victory in the B string race in 12.0 secs.

Rumble powered to his second victory of the day, throwing 46.13m in the javelin and completed a hat-trick of wins in the A string discus, with a throw of 26.30m.

But a late surge from Team Kennet, meant City needed victory in the 4x400m relay to win the meeting.

Steve Maloney, Davis and Daplyn and Moss brought the baton home in first place to secure their triumph.

Result: 1 Oxford City 138pts, 2 Team Kennet 135, 3 Haslemere 122, 4 Chiltern 82.
