Debutant Joe Porter returned match figures of 10-64 as Oxfordshire romped to an emphatic 257-run win over Wiltshire at Banbury yesterday.

The left-arm spinner and former Oxford University captain took 6-37 as Wiltshire slumped from 40-0 to 144 all out in their second innings to add to his first-innings haul of 4-27.

His ten-wicket haul is the best return by a debutant in the last half-century.

It was also Oxon's biggest victory in terms of runs in the past 50 years - eclipsing their 188-run win over Bucks in 1989.

However, they have also recorded five innings victories going back to 1954.

An Oxon victory had looked a distant prospect when they were 94-6 on Sunday, but they showed great character to take control on day two.

Charlie Knightley's swashbuckling century saw Oxfordshire declare on 349-6 and set the visitors 402 to win in 112 overs.

This never looked likely yesterday as Porter led the charge, backed up by Oxford's Adam Cook, who took three excellent close catches, and victory was secured at 1.10pm.

Wiltshire came into the game in good form having pushed Kent very close in the C&G Trophy.

But with no batsmen passing 50 in either innings they failed to capitalise on a strong start.

They began yesterday on 14-0, but only 17-year-old Eddie Abel (38) offered any resistance once Richard Lynch had bowled skipper Russell Rowe.

Porter picked up where he left off in the first innings, claiming six of the remaining nine wickets.

Wiltshire wicket-keeper Neil Shardlow hit out at the end. But the Porter-Cook combination saw him off to complete a memorable day.
