Gary Harris beat off a determined challenge from his Headington Road Runners clubmate Richard Bromley to win the Charndon 5 road race.

Harris battled with Bromley from start to finish, completing the distance in 15mins 40secs, with Bromley just nine seconds adrift.

Phil Egerton, from Abingdon Amblers, was third in 16.02.

The latest event in the Oxfordshire Road Race Grand Prix series, the race, organised by Alchester running Club, followed a circular, undulating route, crossing the Oxfordshire/Bucks border, with the start and finish at Charndon Village Hall.

A record turn-out of more than 200 competitors completed the 3.1-mile course

In the ladies race, veteran runner Allison Hirst made it a Headington double, with a comfortable win in a time of 17.30.

Clubmate Helen Barnes was second in a time of 18.3, with Claire Bennett (Alchester) claiming third spot in 18.53.

Andy Magnall, of Shaftesbury and Barnet AC, secured the Veteran 40 years men's title, ahead of Greg Dell (Woodstock Harriers).

Richard Langton celebrated joining the over 60 years age group by winning his category in 20.06.

Witney Road Runners Club athletes Nicola Gomm and Sally Pitts were second and third respectively in the over 35 women's category in times of 18.53 and 20.06.

Lorraine Daglish was successful in the over 45 age group ladies competition, crossing the line in 21.12 with Barbara Orth, from Thame, a further five seconds adrift.

Maria Breslin secured the ladies' over 55 years age group title with Noel Blatchford, from Abingdon Amblers, in second place.

Team honours in both races went to went to Headington Road Runners. Woodstock Harriers were runners-up in the men's race.

Hosts Alchester, represented by Bennett, Jenny Pyper and Annette Bruce, were second in the ladies race.
