Merritt capture OXFORD City boss Andy Lyne has spoken of his delight after he appointed Thame United midfielder Justin Merritt as his assistant manager.

The midfielder replaces Pete Lamont, who left Court Place Farm following City's relegation from Southern League Division 1 on the last day of the season.

The signing of Merritt, 30, completes Lyne's backroom staff at the Spartan South Midlands League club.

Merritt, who was at Thame for four years, started his career as a professional at Watford and also played at Aylesbury, Brackley, Marlow and Windsor & Eton.

He also had a spell under Lyne at Witney Town.

Merritt completes his UEFA A coaching licence, and has a sports science degree, as well as running his own coaching school.

"Justin Merritt is one of the best and most effective midfield players in local non-league football," said Lyne.

"Besides his obvious qualities as a player, he brings with him a good acumen for business and marketing, first-class coaching qualifications and skills, and an in-depth knowledge of the game."

It is a big blow to Thame wher Merritt was an integral part of the side.

"It wasn't a shock," admitted boss Mark West. "When I spoke to him on Tuesday, he said he was speaking to City and I heard nothing more.

"It wasn't until I saw it on Teletext that I realised he had made up his mind.

"It's not what you want to happen, but that's the way it goes. I'm not going to get all upset if players leave. But we will miss him."
