I feel that I must comment on your article about the county council Tories' proposal to provide free parking for motorists in Oxford in the evenings and on Sundays (Oxford Mail, May 31).
Though superficially attractive, it is, in practice, misguided. I hope that it is not an indicator of what is to come.
This is because all the parking in Oxford, paid or otherwise, is already fully committed.
If you doubt me, just drive around and have a look.
All the Tories' proposal will do is to encourage yet more motorists to swan around the city, looking for parking which does not exist, and deprive the county council of about £1,000 per day in revenue.
This is not being friendly to the city, the motorist, the council taxpayer or anyone else. Bob Johnston, Councillor for Kennington and Radley and Liberal Democrat spokesman on transport, Oxfordshire County Council
