In his letter (Oxford Mail, May 25), referring to Woodstock Town Council, town councillor Julian Cooper mentions the resignation of the town clerk Marion Moxon.

He does not say, however, that Mrs Moxon tendered her resignation because she considered herself overworked and bullied by some councillors, after 16 years' service to Woodstock.

However, she agreed to reconsider after part-time help was offered.

He also fails to mention that a well-attended public meeting in Woodstock supported Mrs Moxon.

This meeting was disregarded by certain members of the town council who, at a meeting held behind closed doors, ousted Mrs Moxon.

This resulted in the resignation of town mayor Gwen Mason.

We seem to be getting rather close to the good councillor's own definition of a banana republic, do we not?

Mr Cooper may well be right that everything was done by the rules. Nevertheless, to many people in Woodstock, it seemed that a Mafia-like vendetta was waged against Mrs Moxon.

Oh, and by the way, I may not have nominated myself for the town, district or county councils over the past 20 years.

However, more than 60 years ago, with many others, I nominated myself for a far more prestigious county organisation -- it was known as the Oxfordshire & Buckinghamshire Light Infantry. Peter Matthews, Oxford Street, Woodstock
