Highways engineers have identified nine sections of dual carriageway in Oxfordshire which do not have crash barriers following the fatal Eastern Bypass smash.

Four people died in the accident on May 28 and Oxford East MP Andrew Smith has led calls for crash barriers to be installed on the grass-covered central reservation near the Horspath Driftway junction.

Marshall Haynes, Liam Hastings and Josh Bartlett, all 13, and Howard Hillsdon, 21, all died in the crash, which happened when a Citroen Xsara crossed the grass central reservation and collided with an oncoming car.

Although county highways bosses have identified eight similar roads without crash barriers they said they wanted to focus on the Eastern Bypass before deciding on a safety review elsewhere.

They added that it was hard to say when the review would begin because it depended on the results of the investigation into the Eastern Bypass accident by Thames Valley Police and road safety officers.

Last week it emerged that no crash barriers were in place at the accident spot because there had been a low number of previous crossover accidents -- where a vehicle crosses the central reservation -- and none had involved deaths since records began in 1979.

Following the fatal crash, Richard Dix, the county council's acting head of transport, pledged to review the lack of barriers at the Eastern Bypass site.

Highways engineers have also drawn up a list of similar sites across the county but there is no guarantee of a review for similar sections of dual carriageway.

The list includes roads where various highway authorities responsible for them over the years have not considered there to be a case for installing barriers on the grounds of accident prevention.

Barriers were erected on an adjacent section of the Eastern Bypass in 1990 after two crossover accidents left motorists dead.

The following county council-run dual carriageways do not have crash barriers:

A40 Northern Bypass, Marston to Headington

A40 Thornhill to Wheatley, (some short lengths but mostly none).

A4142, Eastern Bypass, Rosehill to Heyford Hill

A4130 at Bix

A420 Tubney Woods (intermittent lengths but not continuous)

A4260 at Aston

A41 M40, J9 to Bicester, (some short lengths but mostly none)

On Highway Agency maintained trunk roads

A34 South Hinksey to North Hinksey, (some lengths but mostly none).
