The Lexus GS430 The gentle rush of air as the Lexus GS430 slips along is the only tangible similarity between this understated supersaloon and a jet.
But the technology that is shoe-horned into every corner of this sleek vehicle bears a remarkable resemblance to aircraft science. Most modern planes do not have any physical link between the pilot and the parts that make the plane work. Computers do all the hard work so you don't have to.
The GS430, the flagship of the new GS range, uses a similar philosophy, breaking new ground in demonstrating just what is possible on the ground. Under your right foot is a throttle-by-wire system and next door is brake-by-wire. A gentle press on the accelerator or brake, and computers translate that pressure into action.
From the moment you approach the car you sense the new car is a quantum leap over its predecessor. At the same time, the new GS can also sense you. Using a Smart Key system, that detects the key in your pocket, it offers keyless door opening and locking.
Inside, the engine fires up at the touch of a button, still with the key in your pocket. Slot the six-speed automatic gearshift into reverse and the central eight-inch display screen turns into a TV screen linked to a colour rear-view camera. Front and rear parking sensors also cut the risk of scrapes.
The Lexus DVD-based, voice-operated satellite navigation system is offered with a simple touch-screen operating system that also lets you operate the audio and air conditioning functions and, where compatible, Bluetooth control of your mobile telephone. A 14-speaker sound system with six-disc in-dash CD player delivers exquisite audio.
Radar-controlled cruise control, which automatically maintains a pre-set distance from the car in front, is standard on the GS430 and is linked to a system which can detect if a crash is unavoidable and prepares for it by tightening the seatbelts. If you are not braking hard enough, the system will take over and apply emergency braking itself.
The new Lexus GS is offered with two engines, with prices starting at £30,400. GS300 models are powered by a 3.0-litre V6 that produces 245 horsepower.
