As a regular reader of the Oxford Mail, I would like to thrown in my tenpenny worth on the traffic congestion around Oxford.

I was living in Birmingham around 40 years ago when the city had very similar problems with traffic.

They solved the problem with flyovers and underpasses at junctions. They still have them today, with very good results.

What do Oxford traffic managers do? Traffic lights, islands, anything to stop the traffic or delay it. Cowley Road is being narrowed so that traffic will be delayed, causing tailbacks and engines pumping out fumes.

This will not solve the problem, as the same amount of traffic will still be using the road, only more slowly.

A two-way flyover for the bypass at Barton would clear most of the traffic and, using steel girders, could be in position for all lightweight vehicles (vans and cars) within two weeks. The roundabout at Cutteslowe/Banbury Road could be treated the same.

The Woodstock road/Cheltenham road/A34 junction could be designed like Spaghetti Junction in Birmingham. The traffic management team would do well to visit Birmingham during the peak hours to see the difference it makes on travel time through the centre of our second city.

The dualling of the A40 to the Witney bypass should have been done 20 years ago. Joe Bradshaw, Bodley Place, Cutteslowe, Oxford
