Author JRR Tolkien's favourite watering hole in Oxford is one of 26 pubs in the UK hand-picked to offer the "Perfect Pub Ploughman's".
Richard Goodchild, barman at the Eagle and Child, in St Giles, is pictured tucking into some cheese from a ploughman's platter.
The pub lunch favourite has been given a new lease of life by landlords and the British Cheese Board. It combines a variety of cheeses with bread, an apple, pickled onions, real ale chutney and salad.
Corrie Jones, landlord of the Eagle and Child, said: "We're delighted to be able to offer these special dishes. They offer our customers the chance to try a variety of cheeses not readily available in all pubs.
"It's not about changing tradition, but more about giving our guests additional variety."
The Perfect Pub Ploughman's is on the menu at The Eagle and Child; The Crown, in Cornmarket Street, and The Bear Inn, in Alfred Street, until the end of next month. A full list of participating pubs is available on line at www.britishcheese.com
