I wholeheartedly endorse the outrage of Bea Bradley and Penny Little at the senseless mowing of grass verges (Oxford Mail, June 11).

This destroys many habitats for small creatures and annihilates wild flowers renowned for their beauty. It symbolises gratuitous destruction everywhere.

Industrial society displays an increasing contempt for nature.

Technical progress, without the guidance of morality, is leading to great ecological dangers.

Countless species are now threatened with extinction and the world for future generations could be reduced to a drab, concrete hell, devoid of natural splendours.

We now worship machines, property, the uniform and the artificial. Christ preached: "Consider the flowers of the field."

If we do not soon renounce our callous exploitation of nature, there will be, in future, none left to consider.

We need to realise our unity with all the beings, plants and trees who share the planet.

Our own fate is inextricably linked with them all as manifestations of the one, universal "Will to live".

The guiding philosophy of "Reverence for Life", which is true religion liberated from divisive dogmas, is now more relevant than ever.
