Joe Porter says he must contribute more for Oxfordshire - despite finishing his debut with a record-breaking ten wickets.

The 25-year-old is looking for a better performance in the middle against Devon in his second Minor Counties Championship game, which starts at Challow on Sunday.

Porter, a PE teacher and sports coach at Summer Fields School in Oxford, opened his Oxon account with match figures of 10-64 in their 257-run win over Wiltshire.

But the former Oxford University captain says batting and not spin bowling is his forte.

Porter said: "It has been a pretty good start for the side.

"I'm looking forward to the next game and hopefully I can make a bigger contribution with the bat because I didn't score enough runs last time."

He added: "I've always tried to bowl as much as I can.

"When you play cricket at whatever level, you always want to be involved in the game.

"I would probably say I'm more of a batsman than a bowler, but you've got to be practising both."

Porter expects Devon, who won the championship's Western Division last year, to pose a tougher threat than Wiltshire.

But he admitted that playing Minor Counties cricket had not crossed his mind until this year.

He said: "Devon look a strong side. They got 450 odd for two in their last match against Dorset.

"We'll have to be at our best to beat them."

He added: "I had never really thought about playing and then I got a phone call from Jamie Hewitt (player-coach).

"He said he was getting involved and asked would I come along.

"Playing Minor Counties was probably a step up and I just wanted to see if I could tackle it.

"Jack Potter (team manager) was my coach at Oxford University and I also met Charlie Knightley on tour in Devon."

Porter was the first captain of Oxford UCCE in 2001 and was contracted with Surrey from 1999 to 2001.

But when he graduated in 2002, another door opened at Summer Fields.

Porter said: "My mum is a teacher and my dad was a teacher so it seemed the logical step.

"This came up and I've not looked back since.

"This term I do a day with every age group and I still play cricket on Saturdays for Weybridge.

"It works perfectly for me. I'm not running a team, but I get to see everyone throughout the school."

Oxon's two changes for the Devon game are the fit-again Hewitt replacing Richard Lynch and Stuart Hole coming in for Keith Mustow.
