Hazel Kaye celebrates her win A teacher has become the first person to win the weekly top £1,000 prize in the Oxford Children's Hospital Campaign lottery.
Hazel Kaye, 60, is set to retire from the school she works at in Abingdon this year, and was delighted to have the £1,000 to help celebrate.
Mrs Kaye, of Oxford, said: "I didn't enter the lottery to win, I have never won anything in my life, but this is a campaign I believe in.
"I am not sure what I will spend it on, I would like a new awning for my garden or maybe a holiday.
"I was really surprised and absolutely delighted to win, and I would like to give something back to the hospital too."
Proceeds from the weekly game will go towards the £15m appeal for the dedicated paediatric unit, which is already being built at the John Radcliffe Hospital, Headington, below. The lottery was officially launched in April, with help from the Oxford Mail's parent company Newsquest, and could boost the hospital campaign by £570,000 during the next three years.
The 106-bed children s hospital is due to open in 2007. Call the Lottery hotline on 0870 0501692 to book your tickets.
