It was the closest run Mayor of Ock Street election in living memory -- Stuart Jackson squeezed in by just one vote after two recounts to enter his 10th year as Abingdon's mock mayor.

Mr Jackson, a duty manager at the Guildhall, polled 46 votes.

Breathing down his neck with 45 votes was Roger Cox. In third place was Leslie Argyle with 22 votes and one vote behind him was Rod James. But it was another poor turnout with only 134 votes returned from 900 ballot papers delivered to homes and businesses along Ock Street and cul-de-sacs leading off the main road.

After his narrow victory Mr Jackson said: "It was a close call. I will have to pull out all the stops next year to fight him off.

"It was another disappointing turnout with many people not bothering to vote.

"I am saddened that so many did not bother to become involved in what is one of Abingdon's ancient traditions."
