Toddlers will miss out on new toys as a Bicester playgroup will be forced to spend funds on vandal-proofing its premises to stop youths who repeatedly break in to drink and smoke.
Manager Mandy Andrews and James Smith, four
Staff at Rainbow Playgroup, which is based in Glory Farm School, Hendon Place, Sunderland Drive, are angry that, after all their fundraising efforts, instead of spending cash on new outdoor equipment they will have to pay for extra security to deter teenagers from climbing over the fence into their grounds.
Clare Bold, a committee member for the play group, said: "We are gutted. Last year the parents and families of children were so gen- erous and supportive, the committee and staff were incredible.
"We can't let three-year-old children out to play outside when there are cigarette butts and beer cans lying around.
"Our staff work very hard for not very much and they should not have to spend every morning cleaning up.
"We wanted to spend money we have on outdoor play equipment, but now we are going to have to spend it on outdoor lighting instead. We have been quoted £9,000 for a security fence.
"There's no way we can afford that at the moment that, but it's something we are going to have to bear in mind and save up for in the future."
David Campbell, a crime reduction officer based at Bicester police station, said: "I do sympathise with the group who have worked very hard to provide a stimulating and stable environment for the youngsters.
"I have advised them that ideally what whey need is a much more secure fence, around 6ft high, around the premises.
However I appreciate this would cost several thousand pounds and is certainly way beyond the funds they have.
"In the meantime they should consider better exterior lighting around the premises particularly in the area of the new play castle which seems to be an attraction to the intruders.
"This would cost around £100-150.
"They already have an alarm system but they should put more signs around saying it's alarmed.
"The police will keep a close eye on the premises."
The Rainbow Playgroup will hold a fete to raise badly-needed funds on July 16 and will be at Bicester Carnival on July 10.
