If you get into trouble with your DIY then the man NOT to ask for advice is David Hill from Abingdon because he's been declared Britain's worst DIY Disaster Dad.

But help was at hand for Mr Hill, of Reade Avenue. TV's 'Handy' Andy Kane came to rescue his botched bathroom and unfinished staircase.

"Thank goodness he arrived or else I don't think I would ever have finished the jobs," said Mr Hill.

"I have to admit I got into trouble but the main problem was that I did not have time to finish the work and the jobs hung around for about a year."

Long-suffering wife Catharine nominated her husband in a nationwide search for the worst DIY-er launched by WD-40 the multi-purpose spray.

Mrs Hill, 27, said: "David started renovating our bathroom and staircase more than a year ago.

"He got as far as buying the parts and doing all the easy bits like ripping out the bath panel, skirting boards and bannister -- but then work came to a halt.

"We live in a total mess so that's why I hoped Handy Andy would come to the rescue. Our prayers were answered."

Over the years Mr Hill, 32, has tackled a number of DIY jobs around the house and garden.

But with one-year-old daughter Megan under foot he said he found he had little time to complete his half-finished jobs, and his wife was worried he would never get round to doing them at all.

Mr Hill, who works for Radley Windows, said he worked long hours and could not finish off the jobs at night because Megan was asleep.

He added: "My wife was getting fed up with the mess and it caused a bit of family friction but now I think I'm back in her good books again -- as long as I don't start getting the DIY bug again."

Handy Andy Kane was busy all day Monday putting right Mr Hill's brave but blunder-strewn bathroom epic.

A new wooden bathroom panel was fixed, and the floor tiled. Then came the job of finishing off the staircase and replacing the spindles.

He said: "It was in a state but it's all back in place now and looks good.

"I feel sorry for David because he had the best intentions but didn't have the time to finish the tasks.

"And anyway I don't think he's that bad. He installed decking in the back garden and that looks fine."

With that vote of confidence from the professional, Mr Hill offered to start decorating the rooms.

Catharine said: "I might trust him to do the decorating but we also need a new kitchen fitted. I think I'll call in the experts for that."
