I don't wish to take anything away from the campaign of the Bicester Action Group against the building of an accommodation centre for asylum seekers near Bicester.
However, should the Government make available the money it would have spent, I do not see why Mary Stiff (Oxford Mail, June 23) thinks that Bicester residents deserve it.
The impression I got at the inquiry was that people were not against Government policy on asylum seekers, but against the building of the centre so close to Bicester. The main argument was the lack of facilities.
The Government abandoned the building of the centre because the numbers seeking asylum have dropped, making it no longer a viable proposition.
Those living in affluent areas forget that over the past few years, asylum seekers and refugees have continued to arrive in this country.
Oxford has taken its share in housing them until their cases are heard. I am sure Mrs Stiff can guess where a majority of them were given shelter. Vim Rodrigo, Rivermead Road, Rose Hill, Oxford
