The parents of a 14-month-old girl with a life-threatening brain tumour have raised £5,000 for the Oxford hospital which has cared for her.

Baby Ella was just six weeks old when doctors discovered she had a brain tumour. Since then she has had two operations and chemotherapy treatment at Oxford's John Radcliffe Hospital.

Ella's parents Kevin Ritson and Katy Moore, of Edwin Road, Didcot, have been so touched by the care of doctors and staff they have raised more than £5,000 for the hospital's paediatric unit and children's ward.

After the diagnosis Ella, now 14 months old, immediately underwent two operations to remove the tumour.

The operations were an initial success but a scan in February revealed the tumour had returned.

Further chemotherapy treatment has not been successful and the family are now preparing for the worst.

"She was all right until a rescan in February when they found the tumour had come back in an aggressive way," said Mr Ritson.

"For the past two months she has been having chemotherapy. The staff and doctors have been brilliant."

He added: "Everyone has been marvellous, we couldn't ask for better care from the John Radcliffe."

The family organised an Hawaiian Night earlier this month at Didcot's Conservative Club to raise money and say thank-you to all the staff who have cared for Ella. The sell-out night, including a raffle with 80 prizes donated by local businesses and a fancy dress competition, raised a total of £5,300.

"It took a lot of organising but it was nice to put something back into the system we have benefited from," said Mr Ritson. "The after-care is brilliant. We are in the second phase now and they have been wonderful."

Ella has one sister Abbi, aged three, and Kevin and Katy are currently expecting their third child.
