It was gratifying to see Andrew Ffrench's article linking the recent flooding in Oxford with climate change (Oxford Mail, July 1), but less so to see that he seems to imply that climate change is caused by the hole in the ozone layer.
While the latter is a worrying environmental problem, it has little connection with the extreme weather caused by climate change, which comes about due to the increasing levels of carbon dioxide (and other 'greenhouse gases') in our atmosphere. If we are to deal with climate change, it is obviously very important that we understand what is causing it.
As stated in the article, the Green group on Oxford City Council has put forward a number of radical measures to cut our carbon dioxide emissions. This is the only way to reduce the risk of catastrophic weather in the future. Matt Sellwood (Councillor), Deputy Leader, Green group, Oxford City Council
