Oxford United players will wear black arm bands and join fans for a minute’s silence next week in memory of an aspiring footballer stabbed to death in London.
Seventeen-year-old Godwin Nii Lawson died after he was stabbed in the chest during an attack in Amhurst Park, Hackney, North London, just before 2am on Saturday.
As reported in yesterday’s Oxford Mail, the teenager was a member of Oxford United’s Football and Education Academy.
Last night, United spokesman Chris Williams confirmed the club would publicly mark the tragedy at their next home game on Monday against Salisbury City.
The club play away to Stevenage this evening.
Mr Williams said: “Players will wear black arm bands and will join supporters for a minute’s silence before our game against Salisbury on Bank Holiday Monday.”
The game, at the Kassam Stadium, kicks off at 3pm.
Tributes were paid to Godwin by Simon Lenagan.
Speaking on behalf of the football and education academy and its partner The Oxford Academy youth and community trust, he described Godwin, from Enfield, London, as a dedicated, popular and conscientious student of the academy, which aims to develop boys’ and girls’ footballing and academic abilities.
Godwin was found by police in Amhurst Park and pronounced dead at the scene.
Two other victims were taken to hospital suffering stab wounds but the injuries were not believed to be life-threatening.
He was the fifth teenager to be murdered in London this year. A spokesman for the Metropolitan Police said last night no arrests had been made.
