BEAMING bikers put smiles on the faces of sick children at Oxford Children’s Hospital by delivering Easter eggs to their wards.

Youngsters watched out of the windows as about 50 bikers roared up to the hospital in Headington carrying piles of chocolate on their annual Easter Egg Run.

Some young patients came down from their wards to meet the riders and admire their bikes on the group’s fourth annual trip to the hospital.

Biker Steve Harding, 59, from Berinsfield, said the group, known as the H Riders, travelled to Tesco in Abingdon to buy the eggs in bulk before heading to the hospital.

Father-of-one Mr Harding said: “About 50 of us take 100 Easter eggs and some hot cross buns to the children’s hospital.

“The play specialists at the hospital know we are coming and it gives the children a real boost — they love it.”

Helen Walker, secretary of the H Riders, also from Berinsfield, transported some of the eggs to the hospital in her car.

She said: “If there are any eggs left over at the end of the day, then they get distributed round other hospitals. I take some of the eggs up to the hospital in my car because we can’t fit them all on the bikes.”

She added: “This has become a very popular annual event.”

Sarah Vaccari, a spokesman for the children’s hospital, said: “This is a really lovely gesture from the bikers, who now come here every year.

“The children love seeing the bikes and of course they enjoy the chocolate even more.

“We always appreciate it when people get behind their local hospital and show their support in so many different ways.”

Mr Harding said the H Riders, who take their name from the H Cafe in Berinsfield, were hopeful the café would soon reopen after it closed earlier this month following a downturn in trade.
