A YOUNG artist has enlisted fellow school pupils and teachers to help raise money for victims of the Haiti earthquake.

Amy Isles Freeman, 17, a sixth-former at Oxford High School, in Belbroughton Road, has organised an online art sale of some of the work produced by people connected with the school.

In all, 50 different pieces of artwork are up for grabs for the We HeART Haiti appeal.

Amy said: “It all came about when the Haiti quake happened. As a school, we weren’t doing anything big and I wanted to be involved.

“I had just started selling my own art and I thought if I could do that for Haiti and get all my friends involved, it could raise some money.”

Following brainstorming with fellow pupils at the independent girls school, it was decided to organise an online auction via the school’s website.

Amy said: “It was a lot of hard work getting all the donations, I had to hunt people down and plead with them, and go through the archives of work to find things that might be good.”

The artwork for sale includes lino prints, screen prints, etchings, oil pastels, photographs and acrylics, along with other items such as handmade cards, bags and jewellery.

Amy has contributed a lino print and two screen prints to the sale.

She said: “I think there are some really beautiful pieces, which will look absolutely gorgeous framed in your living room.”

She hopes each lot will be sold for at least £5 but thinks some will make considerably more.

The deadline for bids to be received is Friday.

The money raised will go to the Disaster Emergency Committee’s appeal.

Meanwhile, pupils at a North Oxford school have raised thousands of pounds for children in Haiti with a specially-recorded song.

The song, Our World, was written by members of staff at the Dragon School’s pre-preparatory department Lynams. All 215 pupils, aged four to eight, sing on the recording.

Headmistress Jane West said: “It was very much home-made and from the children’s thoughts. The children were wondering what to do, and they said ‘let’s sing a song and sell it’.”

It is the second time pupils at the school have produced a CD, with the first being written and recorded to help victims of the Asian tsunami five years ago.

Four hundred copies of the Haiti CD were made, most of which have already been sold at £5 each.

Children also covered a map of the Caribbean country in pennies from their pocket money to raise more money. So far the CD and collection have raised about £3,500 for Save the Children's Haiti appeal. Donations were also received from parents.

Meanwhile, a fundraising dinner will be held at the Karma Restaurant, in Oxford Road, Cowley, to raise money for the British Red Cross Haiti appeal.

The three-course dinner is on Easter Sunday, April 4, starting at 7pm.

Tickets for the evening, which includes music and entertainment, cost £19.95.
