WORK has started on Wallingford’s new £221,500 moorings on the River Thames.

A construction rig has arrived at the site to help workmen from contractor Breheny Civil Engineering reinforce the riverbank before building the new jetties along the river.

The project, which is being funded by South Oxfordshire District Council, is intended to increase river tourism in the historic town, and should be completed by May.

Over recent years, boat trippers have increasingly chosen to moor at Abingdon or Henley, instead of Wallingford.

The council and traders in the town hope the project will bring more money into local businesses by encouraging overnight stops.

Councillor Rodney Mann said: “This is a big building project and will obviously create some noise so we have informed local residents and asked our contractors to keep noise to a minimum.”
