Robert Gullifer has been Headmaster of New College School for almost two years. One of the special characteristics of the School is its family atmosphere. “After working in several larger schools I really value the fact that I can get to know all of the boys and their families very well,” he says. “I have lunch with the boys every day, and I am constantly inspired by their enthusiasm and the breathtaking range of their interests.”
The School is a very close-knit community, in which parents and even grandparents are important members. It has occupied a position at the heart of collegiate Oxford since 1379, when the boys slept on straw mattresses in the College and served at table.
Today’s boys draw upon more than six centuries of educational experience, but they also benefit from state-of-the-art facilities: the School’s newest building was opened in 2007, and houses a sports hall, music technology centre and a new art room.
The School is academically ambitious, and provides 16 choristers to the internationally renowned New College Choir, but Mr Gullifer stresses the value that he places upon sporting, artistic, and dramatic activity, too.
“In the end,” says the Head, “it’s our pupils and teachers who make us special. I honestly think that I have the best job in Oxford.”
