Sir – I was in a local pub recently and when a customer went he left the door open. This was greeted with a cry of ‘Do you live in Abingdon’. I had never heard this before, but many of the other customers said it used to be a common refrain when somebody left a door open.
Do any of your readers know how this refrain came about? Was there a shortage of doors in that part of Berkshire, the perceived bad manners of the inhabitants or was it something to do with its role as the traditional county town of Berkshire?
