PUPILS from an Oxford primary school were in perfect harmony with singers from a South African choir yesterday.
The choir from St Ebbe’s Primary School, Whitehouse Road, South Oxford, met 33 members of the Soweto Melodic Voices, above, at Oxford University’s Wadham College.
College chaplain Harriet Harris invited the African youth choir from Johannesburg to visit Oxford.
She said: “They sang traditional Soweto songs and the pupils from the primary school joined in.”
Angie Nethonanda, the tour director of Soweto Melodic Voices, who are aged 16 to 24, said: “The people in the choir enjoyed meeting the primary school pupils – it was a very good workshop, and we have enjoyed our visit to Wadham College.”
Ms Harris said there was a long link between the school and the college.
Robin McCleery, the college dean, who died in 2008, was married to Jill McCleery, the head of governors at St Ebbe’s.
Ms Harris said the college set up a fund in Mr McCleery’s name to help primary schools.
She added: “Mrs McCleery wanted the St Ebbe’s Primary School choir to come and sing at Wadham College and this seemed like the perfect opportunity.”
Members of the Wadham choir also joined the workshop.
