This year marks the 60th anniversary of the start of the Korean War – which began on June 25, 1950.
A ceasefire was agreed on July 27, 1953. However, no formal peace agreement exists between Communist North Korea and the Republic of Korea.
Over 1,000 UK Service personnel died in the war – the highest number for any conflict since the Second World War.
Thousands were wounded and over 900 taken prisoner of war. Veterans who served there refer to it as “the forgotten war”. It took place in a country on the other side of the world that, at the time, few people had heard of.
The president of the Republic of Korea wishes to send a letter of appreciation to all veterans who served in the Korean War. Those eligible who would like to receive this letter should contact Albert Davey, Secretary, Swindon & North Wilts Branch, British Korean Veterans Association, on 01793 850471.
