Exlovers are one of the most exciting new bands in the UK. Formed in London in 2008, they have only released one EP and two 7-inch singles, but have already built up a good following. Having completed two lengthy support tours, this jaunt sees them stepping out as headliners for the first time, and judging by tonight’s gig, they are more than ready.
Co-fronted by Peter Scott and Laurel Sills (pictured), the band’s boy/girl vocal dynamic brings to mind Rumours era Fleetwood Mac and Canadian outfit Stars, both voices at once cooing sweetness and heartbroken yearning. Musically, they combine all the best bits of Britpop, shoe gaze and alt rock in their sound, with Pulp, Teenage Fanclub and Dandy Warhols being most pronounced in the mix.
Everything the band offers sounds superb. New single You Forget So Easily exudes sultry charm, Photobooth is a blissful, fuzzy ballad and Just a Silhouette is a perfectly formed pop song. The band also somehow manage to transform Chris Isaak’s cheesetastic, Mercedes car advert soundtracking Wicked Game into sounding like Velvet Underground on top form.
Each song actually seems like an intimate portrait of a troubled relationship, a lyrical topic that’s almost impossible to cover without sounding either clichéd or cheesy, but Exlovers have it nailed. From now on, every scene in a film where one lover realises they’ve made a terrible mistake and starts running through the pouring rain to correct what they’ve done, Exlovers will be playing in the background, softly, beautifully, telling us that though things are probably ruined for good, it was nice while it lasted.
The band should be heading into the studio after they wrap up this tour and, on tonight’s evidence, their debut should be completely wonderful. No new band this year will be worthier of your adoration and devotion than Exlovers.
