Sir – You note (Report, March 4) that most people exceed the 20mph speed limit. I’m not sure this is interesting or surprising — many people routinely exceed speed limits. If you stand on the Woodstock Road in Oxford on a Friday night (limit 30mph), you’ll see a lot of people driving in excess of 40.
The relevant questions for measuring the success of the new scheme are “Since the introduction of 20 mph limits, do drivers drive more slowly? Is there a consequent reduction in the injuries sustained in car accidents?”
Without before and after data, you’re just not in a position to know that. Hopefully the council is in a better position than you to measure the success of the initiative!
