GOOD Samaritans are being urged to step forward and help their neighbours in a new scheme in Kidlington.

Volunteers who can offer even one hour a week are needed to support people who need a little extra help.

Jobs can involve dog-walking, running errands, mowing lawns – or simply popping in to someone’s home for a chat.

The Good Neighbour scheme has been launched by Kidlington and District Information Centre, which is based at Exeter Hall.

Organisers hope it will become fully operational over the next three months.

It is part of a national movement to get people helping their neighbours, and schemes already run in Bicester and Banbury.

Centre manager Lesley Higgins said helping people could boost community spirit.

She said: “Kidlington is still a village and there are already lots of people helping others. This is just a way of making it official and getting as many villagers as possible on board to help others.

“We are still in the early stages and there is still a lot of work to do, But we are pleased with the initial response we have received.”

More than 100 people have already visited the centre to register their interest in the scheme, including people who were looking for volunteers to help them.

Those who sign up will need to be checked by the Criminal Records Bureau and will be able to claim any expenses they incur.

Ms Higgins said: “It’s obviously important to make clear that this scheme is only for those who really need the help.

“We have to use our resources as efficiently as possible and use them wisely.

“I think it will be a really positive scheme for Kidlington and will be a real help to a lot of people living nearby.”

People can apply by visiting the office between 10am and 2pm on Mondays, Wednesday and Fridays.

Alternatively, call the centre on 01865 378479.
