UNIQUE pieces of rock and roll memorabilia are being auctioned off for Oxford charity Oxfam’s Haiti earthquake appeal.

There are 63 items up for grabs on Internet auction site eBay from some of the biggest names in the music industry.

The auction looks set to raise at least £75,000 for the cause.

Oxfam’s Stuart Fowkes said: “As soon as the earthquake in Haiti struck, we had people spontaneously coming to us and saying what can we do to help.

“We are also very close to Emily Eavis and the Glastonbury Festival team and between us we thought we had the contacts to make sure we had a pretty decent auction.

“We asked a lot of people and the response was pretty amazing.”

The lots up for grabs include several from Oxford-based bands, a guitar played by Jimmy Kimmel from Foals, a signed T-shirt and limited edition CD from Stornoway, and a Fleet Street Apocalypse linocut by Radiohead artist Stanley Donwood.

They sit alongside one-of-a-kind items like Alesha Dixon’s wedding dress, the tour jacket worn — and signed — by Coldplay’s Chris Martin during the band’s Viva la Vida tour, and the opportunity to have the Magic Numbers perform in your own garden.

Mr Fowkes said: “Every day we’ve been thinking we can’t possibly get anything better than, say Damon Albarn writing a song for someone, and it just keeps getting better.

“This is all stuff that money can’t usually buy.

“The nature of eBay is the last day and last hours always see a massive flurry of activity so we are expecting a big spike on the last day — and at this point it would not surprise me to see any one of those items making an obscenely huge amount of money.”

Most of the auctions are due to finish at some point today and many items have already gone.

Mr Fowkes said he realised most people could not afford to spend several thousand pounds on a once-in-a-lifetime rock experience — but hoped that those who could not afford the big ticket items would be inspired by the artists’ generosity and contribute to the appeal in a way they could afford.

He said: “This is glitzy high profile stuff and we expect it to attract correspondingly glitzy high profile prices. But we want everyone to give to the appeal – whether it is £2 or £10, it is still much appreciated.”

Oxfam’s appeal has now made enough money to cover the first six months of its emergency response, with things such as water, sanitation and emergency shelter.

But the Cowley-based charity is seeking to raise enough to pay for four or five years rebuilding and reconstruction work.
