I WAS interested to read your report of the Iraq inquiry (Oxford Mail, January 30) and that you also reported on Joe Glenton, a soldier, based at Dalton Barracks, who faces up to two years in prison for refusing to fight in Afghanistan.
With the emphasis on the Iraq inquiry, it is easy to forget that the war in Afghanistan – and the methods being used to fight it – are immoral and quite possibly illegal. And that is why Joe is not prepared to return.
His experience in Afghanistan showed him that the war was neither reducing the risk of terrorism in the UK nor improving lives in Afghanistan where it has brought death and devastation.
At 7.30pm on February 11, Dr Elaheh Rostami-Povey, an internationally renowned expert on Afghanistan, will be speaking at Oxford Town Hall at a meeting hosted by Oxford Stop the War Coalition.
She will explain how the ongoing war has done nothing for reconstruction, democracy nor for women’s liberation.
