A SCHIZOPHRENIC who leapt to his death from a car park believed he had killed Princess Diana, an inquest heard yesterday.
Mark Hapgood, from Blackbird Leys, was 25 when he jumped from the multi-storey at Templars Square, Cowley, Oxford, on April 7 last year.
Oxford Coroner’s Court heard that he was diagnosed with depression in 2002 and his condition worsened in 2006.
Mr Hapgood’s GP, Dr Matthew Wilkinson of The Leys Health Centre, said that by February 2009 Mr Hapgood was clearly unwell and “believed he had killed Princess Diana and Dodi (Fayed)”.
Mr Hapgood, who had a three-year-old child with his ex-girlfriend, was referred to Warneford Hospital, Headington and then to the Phoenix Ward at Littlemore Hospital.
The day before his death, his ex-girlfriend called the hospital to say he had threatened to commit suicide.
On the day of his death Mr Hapgood had been to Simon House, in Paradise Street, where he was due to be given a room.
Nurse Darren Hunt, who dropped Mr Hapgood off outside Templars Square at about 1.25pm to see a friend, said he appeared quiet but he was not worried about him. His body was found on the pavement minutes later.
Coroner Nicholas Gardiner recorded a verdict that Mr Hapgood had taken his own life.
