Oxford University’s Iffley Road Sports Centre will be unveiled to the public today.
The university last night released artists' impressions of what the centre could look like if a multi-million pound redevelopment goes ahead.
The £25m project will see a new sports hall, grandstand and indoor sports facilities on the site of Sir Roger Bannister’s record-breaking four minute mile in 1954.
The university also repeated its pledge that local people would be able to use the new gymnasium and join some sports clubs.
Jon Roycroft, the university’s director of sport, said: “These much needed facilities will be used by university sports teams, the university at large and importantly the local community.”
An exhibition showing the redevelopment plans will be held in the University Rugby Club Pavilion, off Iffley Road, from 3pm until 8pm today.
An application will be submitted in the spring, but even if it is successful the new facilities are unlikely to be finished before 2014.
